A Little of Our History
This fine tudor building was erected in 1470 originally of timber which in the 16th century was replaced with the stonework seen now. However the original wooden beams are still in use supporting the three hundred year old ceiling (see photo page). A minstrels' gallery is still in evidence in its authentic condition.
Built primarily as a Manor House, its use has changed over the past centuries. Joseph Priestley, the father of modern science, lived here during his formative years and the notorious highwayman Nevison used the building as one of his hideouts before his capture and subsequent execution at York. Eventually The Old Hall became a pub 21 years ago. 12 years ago it was acquired by Sam Smith's Brewery Tadcaster who are the present owners.
The Old Hall is proud to boast 2 ghosts, one a lady in black and the other of a small boy, both frequently seen by staff and customers.
The Old Hall is listed in the Good Beer Guide, The Good Pub Guide and Duffy's Top 40 Fish 'n' Chips of Yorkshire.
There are occasional meetings of the Priestley Society and The Javelin Society held here.
The Old Hall is now managed by Bob and Jackie Green
